Antonio (Tony) Rossi has had a career as a Director of Photography spanning more than 30 years. He began his life as an image maker in still photography. His interest in the diversity of stories that people tell about themselves was born in a small Italian village, nurtured in the cultural mosaic of Philadelphia, and given context through the study of anthropology at Amherst College and ethnographic film at NYU. Tony will always be inspired and enthralled by the range of the human experience, and his work is committed to allowing people to tell their stories in an expressive, lyrical, and dignified style.
After graduate study and training in narrative film and television, he has focused on documentary. Over the course of his career, Tony has shot numerous documentary films and television series for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, Showtime, PBS, Vice, National Geographic, Bravo, ABC, A&E, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, and MTV.
Tony has served as the Director of Photography on numerous projects for Jigsaw Productions, including “The Inventor,” “The Clinton Affair,” “Divide and Conquer,” “Zero Days,” and five seasons of “Death Row Stories.” He was a co-cinematographer for Raoul Peck’s “Silver Dollar Road.” Tony’s cinematography has also been featured in numerous films directed by Stanley Nelson, including the Oscar nominated “Attica,” “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” “Tell Them We are Rising,” and “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution”. Recently, he served as principal cinematographer for a series of television series for Henry Louis Gates Jr. and PBS, including “Gospel”, “Making Black America,” “The Black Church,” and “Reconstruction.” He has also photographed Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens’ climate change documentary, “Before the Flood,” HBO’s “Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing,” directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, and he served as Director of Photography for Charles Ferguson’s first film, “No End in Sight,” which won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2007. Recently, he has worked on projects for Chris Smith, ZPZ, Motto Films, and The Documentary Group. Other directors Tony has shot for include Blair Foster, Rory Kennedy, Sara Enright, Thom Zimny, Leslie Iwerks, Jesse Moss, Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, Barbara Kopple, Richard Hankin, and Edet Belzberg.
